MOBILE, Alabama — In July 2009, attorney Ralph Holberg contacted local musicians to brainstorm how to create a nonprofit organization to play and preserve Big Band era music.
The end result was Mobile Big Band Society Inc., which was incorporated in October 2009 and was “formed to support the performance and preservation of the music of the Big Band era,” said Holberg, who is founder and one of the directors of the society.
“Regional musicians play for the sheer joy of the music and for their ‘mature’ fans, who have heard and loved the music all their lives,” said Holberg. “They also play for the younger set, many just discovering the melodies, harmonies and romantic lyrics of the Great American Song Book.”
